THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the French novel LE FANTÔME DE L'OPÉRA by Gaston Leroux.
The musical first opened in the West End in 1986, and then on Broadway in 1988. The music was composed by Webber, with lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. Alan Jay Lerner was sought after by Webber, but Lerner withdrew after writing MASQUERADE, citing health problems. The central plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius known as "The Phantom of the Opera".
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is one of the most popular, most seen musicals ever and is the longest-running musical in Broadway history (having surpassed Webber's CATS). It is one of the most successful entertainment projects, grossing more than $5 billion worldwide. It's a testament to Andrew Lloyd Webber's crowd-pleasing compositional skills that helped the original cast recording of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA went on to become the biggest-selling cast album ever.
