ABBA GOLD: GREATEST HITS is a compilation album of recordings by Swedish pop group ABBA, released by PolyGram in 1993.
Prior to its release, all previously released ABBA compilations had been deleted and only the original studio albums (along with the 1986 live album) remained in print. ABBA GOLD: GREATEST HITS was well received by the music-buying public, and went on to be one of the Top 30 best-selling albums of all time worldwide with over 28 million units shipped.
In seemingly random order, ABBA GOLD: GREATEST HITS contains fourteen of Abba's twenty American hits of the 70's and early 80's (the remainder are on MORE ABBA GOLD) like "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and the other landmarks of upbeat melancholy, layered harmonies and brilliant keyboard arrangements. These songs don't easily fit into any pop timeline, which may be why Abba received much of their acclaim long after breaking up. What may have seemed like Euro-pop fluff in its day, has been revealed by time to be truly classic studio pop.
The Swedish band's songs had show-tune and 60's-pop roots, skirted around the edge of disco, and were an unspoken influence on new wave. Abba had a grandiose vision of pop's place in the world -- "who could live without it, I ask in all honesty," is how they put it in "Thank You For The Music," their Broadway - like farewell gesture.
